“Why are you delaying? What are you doing? Why do we not have the Scriptures? Why are you taking so long? Are you even working? It seems that you just don't care.” These were questions Laban faced. Questions asked by the impatience of a community longing for God’s word in their native language.

This is Laban. He lives among the Rendille people in Northern Kenya. In 1981, Laban began the monumental task of translating the Scriptures into the Rendille language. Despite setbacks, including periods of devastating famine, Laban and his team kept going.

“It's a calling. If it wasn’t, I would have given up long ago. I had this deep desire to serve the Lord and to see my community have the word of God for themselves. That is what kept me going.”

In 2018, after 37 years of dedicated work, Laban and his team completed the New Testament translation. For the first time in history, the Rendille people could hold the Scriptures in their own language.

When we give to Scripture translation, we give to moments like these– moments of pure joy, moments when people can finally rejoice and say, "God speaks my language!" Today, more than 3,000 language groups still have little or no access to Scripture. But we, the Global Church, can change that. And together, we will.
