The story of a revival in Asia
For over a century, a quiet revival has been unfolding across Asia. During the 20th century, the Christian population of Asia doubled the growth rate of the general population. Today, there are an estimated 415 million Christians across the continent. Yet, amidst this widespread growth, a significant challenge remains: a lack of pastoral training.
Globally, more than 90% of pastors have little to no formal theological education. This statistic holds true in Nepal, the home of Pastor Raj. To protect his ministry and his ability to travel throughout Nepal, we cannot tell you his real name, but Pastor Raj carries a story of overcoming the odds.
In 2010, Raj traveled abroad, where he met Dr. Jaison Thomas and Dr. Jesse Jaison, a husband-and-wife who have trained hundreds of pastors, many of them first-generation Christians like Raj. Under their mentorship, Raj gained the biblical, missional, and leadership skills he needed. He was commissioned to share the gospel to the most remote corners of Nepal, and this is exactly what he has done.
In his village, Pastor Raj built a hut where he could gather friends and neighbors. Hindus, Buddhists, and Animists all came to hear Pastor Raj share the good news of Jesus. One fellowship quickly grew to five, then ten then twenty-five. Pastor Raj continued to travel throughout the remote villages, sharing the gospel with anyone who would listen. Recognizing the importance of reaching everyone, he began training women to be able to share their faith within their communities. These small gatherings have turned into multiple congregations of hundreds of people, and many have chosen to be baptized as a public declaration of their faith. Pastor Raj is a firsthand witness to the kindness and power of God moving through the mountains of Nepal.
This work is not without its challenges. There remains a strong societal resistance to Christianity in Nepal, and Pastor Raj and his family have counted the costs.
“Sharing the gospel in Nepal is worth it because Jesus is worthy. The gospel is the power of God for salvation, and the darkness cannot overcome the light. Our boldness in Christ comes not from our strength, but from the Spirit who lives in us.”
It is the voice of Jesus that prompts men and women like Dr. Jaison and Dr. Jesse to train and equip pastors. And it is the voice of Jesus that guides pastors like Raj as they travel throughout their nations, preaching the good news, and witnessing the quiet revival taking place in Asia.
