    A Sign for Hope

Bringing God's Word to the Deaf Community

A special thanks to Gospel Patrons and Deaf Bible Society for sharing this video footage with Gather25, which was adapted from the original short film, The Deaf Shall Hear.

Currently, there are 70 million deaf people across the world, and among those 70 million, only 2% are Christian. One of the major hurdles to reaching deaf populations with the gospel is the lack of Scripture in their language. There are over 300 different sign languages on earth, and only one of them has a full translation of the Bible. In Brazil alone, there are 9.8 million deaf people who are waiting for the Scriptures in the language that they know best.

There are roughly 2 million deaf people in the Philippines, and only 2% to 3% know Jesus. There is a need for sign language translation because deaf people in the community haven't gone to elementary or high school and haven't even learned to read and write. So sign language is their first language, their native language.

When we ask a deaf person to read a printed Bible, it's the same as asking them to read a foreign language. Because of this reality, much of the world's deaf population have yet to hear the truth of the gospel. As a global population, the deaf are among the largest unreached people groups on the planet. In Japan, there are more than 300,000 deaf people. All around the world, many people are surprised to learn that deaf Bible translation is not just another printed Bible,

A sign language Bible is God's word recorded in a video form. For deaf people in Tokyo, their first language is Japanese sign language, and that's why they need a Bible in sign language.

There are significant challenges to this process. A sign language translation takes twice as long as written languages and costs five times as much. The challenge is great, but so is the reward.

Ethiopia has 3.8 million deaf people. My dream is for the deaf to grow spiritually. As we give the translations to them, the deaf people will be able to understand the Bible more and become believers.

We can be the generation who brings the Scripture to deaf people all around the world so that they too can be brought to life by the power of God's word. This is part of how we carry the message of Jesus to everybody everywhere.
